Why Is My Heat Pump Running But Not Cooling Properly?

Your heat pump can run but not cool due to airflow, refrigerant, or control faults. A clogged filter reduces airflow. A miscalibrated thermostat sends the wrong signal. Low refrigerant pressure limits heat transfer. Dirty evaporator or condenser coils cut capacity. A backed-up drain can trip the safety float switch. Worn relays or contactor points stop the compressor. Abnormal compressor amp draw signals trouble. ECM’s maintenance checks include pressure readings, coil inspections, temperature differential, drain flush, and electrical checks (relays/contactors).

Quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to Cool and lower 3°F.
  • Replace the filter.
  • Look for water at the air handler/drain.
